“Choose Your Own Adventure” – The Best Kind of Story

Stand on Your Own

If someone reads a book before you do, they are perfectly capable of walking up to you and informing you, in no uncertain terms, how it’s going to end. (If this happens they should immediately be put on your ‘not secret society material‘ list, as endings in my opinion, are to be kept to yourself until the book has been read by both parties.)

As wrong as it would be to tell you about it, what they know of how it turns out would be accurate. They have read the exact same book you have, with the exact same characters, words and chapters. If, on the other hand, someone tries to tell you how your life is going to turn out or what your decisions will result in – no matter their experiences, you must take it with a grain of salt.

I’m not saying to discount their opinion, or to ignore it; after all we are wise to learn from the experiences of others. What is important to realize is that your decisions and your circumstances are completely unique to you. Let the successes of others motivate you, but never allow their failures to come between you and your dreams.

If someone, even someone you trust explicitly, tells you that you will never have what you desire, that it simply isn’t in the cards; will you listen? Would you allow their opinion to hold you back from what you want? The answer should be no. So what if you’re giving them the opportunity to say “I told you so?” – You have the right to your own triumphs and failures.

Your life is your story. You are the author, the editor and the publisher. You choose where it goes, what to change and who has the honor of being a part of it.

Choose wisely, follow your dreams and fight for the people you care about; for a story without love can only be a tragedy.

  1. Yes the choices are so OUR OWN….and I for one will only write fantabulous endings for all my stories…for I believe we actually have more than one throughout our lifetimes….AND if we change directions at any time, so does the story line….it is a great ride folks…..just remember who is in charge!!!! Have a “woohoo” life ……you may as well, as YOU are the author….Thanks for this story Beth…

  2. Very deep. I like it. I do have to say that many time in my life i had, what many people would call, unrealistic dreams. I do have to say that i have fallen to the challenge. As for you i see that you have followed your dreams. I wish i would have had the courage to do it, but in the end i can only blame myself. I have had many opportunities but i lack the determination. I have always had big dreams and big ideas. Wanting to see the world meet new people. Learn something new everyday. I believe that if i could just focus i could accomplish great things. But to find that inner calm to sort through my thoughts always seems to allude me.

    1. Maybe you just need a push (or a gentle shove). Don’t give up just because you haven’t gotten there yet. As long as you are still alive you have the opportunity to fulfill any and all your dreams. ;) I am certain you will find that calm you’re searching for.

Interestingly enough, what I was fighting for; the inspiration for this post – is something that I have since lost. I don’t believe it was through anything I did; but somethings, no matter how much you desire them, aren’t meant to be yours. Perhaps being willing to find new dreams, and to continue to fight and open new doors is as important as following through with the ones you have today.

It means a great deal to me that you stopped by. I’m glad you like it.
