Standing on my Soapbox

While listening to one of my local radio stations, which I do on a rather regular basis, one of the DJ’s uttered a phrase which was so grossly inaccurate that I simply cannot resist the urge to talk about it. In all honesty I think he only says the things that he does to make people like me find the nearest soapbox.
He said, and I quote, “you have to do what everyone else does to be successful”. Even though they kept on talking, all I heard was an echoing silence and then a little voice in my brain started screaming. And so here I am.
The ‘thing that everyone does’ and all the ridiculous trends, were started by one person at the very dawn of their emergence. It is not as though hundreds of thousands of people simply begin doing the very same thing at precisely the same moment.
The people who started it, they were doing something different.
Oh sure, once the masses decide that they like something it tends to stick around for a while and all the copycats get their five minutes. That being said, eventually it dies out and the only ones that are remembered are the ones who stood out from the crowd.
Do what everyone else does if the only thing that matters to you is immediate acceptance and a little bit of peer approval.
If you’re made of more solid matter, do what you do, and do it well.
It’s the ground-breakers and the entrepreneurs that can change the world. It is new ideas and new technology that make a difference.
If we all did what everyone else does we would still be living in little caves with clubs and greasy hair – and I would have been eaten by a wild animal because I wouldn’t have been able to see it sneaking up on me! So please, whatever you do, don’t always listen to the voices on the radio. For my sake, as well as yours.

Deception Point: Dan Brown

I know there isn’t much of a chance that you are a reader and haven’t heard of Dan Brown. However my chances are slightly better that you’ve only heard of the two that were turned into movies.

Granted, I enjoyed both of them (the books, not the movies)- however neither so much as one of his completely unrelated novels.

Deception Point is an attention grabbing thriller with just enough of a hint of science fiction to satisfy my particular tastes. Oh don’t worry, if you’re not a science fiction person you’ll be too busy focusing on all the action to notice – but I enjoy a book that talks about the ramifications of extraterrestrial life.

It’s a long book, so don’t expect to read it in one sitting, but it was interesting enough all the way through to keep my attention.

4.5 Stars.

I know, I know, I tend to give high ratings – but that is just because I don’t review books that I don’t like!

Greetings

Welcome! In an effort to help you discover some great electronic books, I have begun putting together a comprehensive list of books I have read and recommend.

Yep, that means I have read each and every book on the blog. Should your interests lie in the realms of Science Fiction and Fantasy with the occasional jaunt into other genres – you might just like what you find there.

All books in my archive link back to Amazon.com – and if you are interested in purchasing one of them, I would appreciate it if you would do so via this blog. The commission I hope to one day receive will enable me to continue this rather experimental venture.

I know, I know, there’s nothing actually here yet – this is very much a work in progress, but please, give me time.

The Ebb and Flow of the English Language

I spent a little bit of time recently doing some research on a very common English phrase. The only reason being that I thought it was correct one way while nearly everyone else says it differently. I don’t like discrepancies like that, and the thought that I might have been saying it wrong for years horrifies me just a bit.

Like chasm. It’s honestly not my fault that I had never heard anyone say the word till I was 11. I had however seen it in writing countless times and had no reason to think that it was pronounced any way other than CH-asm. Oh the embarrassment.
Childhood nightmares aside, the phrase in question is the one I knew as ‘tide me over’ and the version I seem to hear most is ‘tie me over’.
Some people will vehemently argue that the second is correct for the simple reason that the first one makes no sense. Sadly, they are incorrect.
Let me explain it as I have learnt – the reference is definitely to the tide, as in the flow of water in the ocean. The rising tide, the ebbing tide, the amazing moon controlled ‘thing’ that can carry a ship effortlessly in to land. “Drifting with the tide.” To ‘tide over’ means that you will be ‘carried over’.
ie. An inheritance will tide you over financially for many years.
A snack will tide you over until dinner!
If you doubt me, take a look in your nearest Oxford Dictionary under the word ‘tide’. Or, because we’re in the wonderful age of technology go to dictionary.com or merriam-webster.com and search tide or tide over!
—Verb phrase
15.
tide over,
a.
to assist in getting over a period of difficulty or distress.
b.
to surmount (a difficulty, obstacle, etc.); survive.
If anyone argues with you – buy them a dictionary!
And so ends another episode of The Mysteries of the English Language.

“Do it while you can.”

Since I officially announced my latest grandiose scheme, the response I’ve received hasn’t been the one that I expected.

I thought that when I informed the world that I was leaving my steady writing job for the tumultuous world of freelancing and the dream of one day publishing a novel – that I would be laughed out of the room. If not to my face then I at least expected people to wonder if I knew what I was doing, and if I had possibly lost my mind.

Not so. It is true that people are wondering what I am doing, and to my gratitude those that I work with have expressed regrets that I will no longer be working with them, yet not a single one has criticized me in the slightest.

It makes me wonder if dreamers are slightly more prevalent than I previously made them out to be. Perhaps they are not so rare – after all; only those who do not dream will fail to appreciate the dreams of others.

Due to the overwhelming approval I have received with the announcement of my plans, I have come to conclude that there are a great many dreamers in this world. A fact which fills me with hope.

On a slight side note; I would much rather call this change beginning a new job rather than quitting my current one. Quitting implies failure and an inability to continue, beginnings are much more auspicious, so that is precisely what I’m going with.

To clarify matters slightly, since this is the first time I’ve mentioned this anywhere online – as of April 1st, I will be heading straight into a brand new life. One that is filled with uncertainty and the possibility of failure. But more importantly it is filled with dreams, and the chance to achieve everything I have always longed for. The latter, in my opinion, being much more important than the former.

Spring(ish) in the Hat

Spring is nearly here, or at least near enough that for the first time in far too long, I can finally see dirt beneath the snow!
With that absolutely fantastic thought in mind, it makes me ask – what are your big plans once the weather improves? Do you have any events planned? Anything interesting going on in the next few months that I should know about?
What are you looking forward to?

Taking a Stand

If you allow anyone who supports freedom and the equality of all humans to be destroyed, beaten down or ridiculed, you begin to chip away at the part of yourself that can fight for what is right. Even standing to the side just once is enough to pull you from the ranks of free-thinkers and deposit you into the herds of mindless sheep led around by whatever shepherd has control.

What do I mean when I talk about the equality of humanity? Well think on this; There can never be equality among humans so long as any one group hoards information. Knowledge is power, and we, whether we can see it or not, are enslaved by those who have the most information.

Humanity can never be truly free until knowledge is there for the taking. Secrets do not protect, secrets enable. They give power to those who hold them, a power that will not be used to benefit anyone but those that wield it. Governments are supposed to work for the people, not keep them in the dark and feed them lies.

Stand up for what is right – if only to acknowledge that something is wrong. Take the leap and stand up in front the masses who can’t see beyond the nose on their face. Let them see that someone is not afraid to say what they believe.

I believe that this is wrong.

Music for the mind, the soul and the muse.

Well hello there!

Fancy meeting you here. This is a rather fabulous coincidence — you see, I was just hoping someone would stop by so I could pick their brain for a few minutes. I hope you don’t mind, but your brain looks especially pick-able.

I’m looking to expand my music repertoire… and considering it is rather limited at the moment, it should be pretty easy. Perhaps you might be able to make some recommendations for me?

To help you out I’ll explain what kind of music I’m looking for, (how considerate eh?).

Alright.
I’m in need of some really good instrumental music. I’m looking for instrumental because it contains no distracting lyrics and thus I won’t stop working to sing along! As fun as it is, it’s rather terrible for productivity.

Nothing too radical, mind blowing or creepy – it is supposed to aid the thinking process not destroy it entirely. I find that I particularly enjoy violin, flute/pipes, harp and piano. That doesn’t mean I’m not open to other instruments.

This is your chance to open my mind to the music of other cultures as well – I heard some amazing Chinese traditional music the other day, not sure what it was, but it was perfect – so I’m not limiting you to Johann Sebastian Bach!

Friends, Twitterpeeps, countrymen — lend me your music!

Let’s talk about fonts.

I am by no means an expert on fonts – I can tell you which ones I like, which ones I don’t and the basic category that they fall into. Some of the time I might be right.
In fact, my knowledge of fonts is much like my knowledge of wine – yet the lack thereof doesn’t stop me from enjoying either.
I personally enjoy fonts that are unique, yet still easy to read – I prefer my wine red and dry.
The point of this post is not to educate you on how incredibly uneducated I happen to be, but rather to point you in the direction of a resource that might just come in handy. Fonts can be expensive. Especially if you find yourself in need of more than one. If you come across that one perfect font that you just can’t live without – then it might be worth it to pony up the cash. Otherwise – it might not!

Free fonts are pretty easy to find – fonts that are free for commercial use are slightly less common. As fabulous as Veer.com is, not all of us are designers with specific requirements. Some of us are faintly impoverished writers just looking to make it in the big bad world.

If you fall anywhere near the latter category, and wish to save your $50 for sushi and a few drinks – then check out www.fontsquirrel.com. It was recommended to me, and after trying it out and finding it more than satisfying, I am passing it on to you.

Enjoy!
