Classics, Censorship and #%@*

For the first time in a while I have been roused out of my usual sense of “I have nothing to say on this particular topic”. That’s all gone now, dispersed by the winds of “Are you freakin’ kidding me??”.

Outrage, incredulity and a complete lack of surprise all found their way into my realm when I learnt about a little endeavour that is in the works.
The current plan is to change the school edition of a classic, Huckleberry Finn, because it uses a word that is (Oh dear no! I cannot bear it!) offensive.
They’re trying to pass off modified works as a classic, without batting an eyelash over how much it changes the consistency and point of the novel! The worst part is, it’s not even just censorship. It’s forgery, lies… lunacy.
Ok, ok, I know that this debate has been going on for eons, but I want my two cents in the bank – thankyouverymuch.
First off. One word, good or bad, carries a certain depth of meaning that cannot be portrayed as well by any other word. That is one of the many reasons why writing a book takes so damn long. If you don’t choose your words correctly you will never convey exactly the point you want to, and then what really is the point??
Change the ‘n-word’ to ‘slave’ in editions of Huckleberry Finn and sure, you’ve just eliminated a word that has no place in today’s vocabulary but you’re also destroying the historical implications of the book. Finn’s views of the world have suddenly changed, along with the very essence of the novel. Do this and you’ve begun to crumble the backbone of the classic.
I’d worry more about the generations of youth that use the word in everyday speech. They are the ones causing offence – and I hate to tell you this, but the majority of them didn’t learn it from a book. You can all rest easy knowing that most school children will simply read the notes, learn enough to pass the test, and flip through the pages a few times to make it seem like they actually read it.
Maybe it would be a good thing for students to understand the historic implications of such a word and just why that would have been the only word Finn would have used. Maybe then when they hear it 18 times in their favorite song they will realize just how ludicrous the use of it is. Maybe.
It is amazing to realize just how many passages and works are censored in today’s schools. Here’s a novel idea for you. Instead of ripping out a passage of text because an individual may not approve, or it paints the historic female situation in a bad light – maybe try pointing out that passage and explaining why things have changed.
Or wait. Are you trying to make us forget that not very long ago women had as few rights as a dog, or that individuals with colored skin weren’t even considered to be human? This is our past, as unpleasant and horrifying as it is. As soon as you try and take it away you are also depriving the human race of all the lessons that the past is meant to teach us.
What is next? That’s the part that makes my stomach knot.
Are Jane Austin’s books going to be changed because of how they portray women? Are classic paintings going to be modified because the women are topless? Is someone going to have to wrap a shawl around the Venus de Milo?
Of course, watching porn and promoting products with sex will always be perfectly fine, just so long as it’s making money.
Planet earth. You have lost your mind.

The time for change… is generally when you don’t want it.

I’m not sure if I’ll ever really adjust to how much life can change. It’s unbelievable when you think about it, how it happens. One tiny little thought, a seemingly inconsequential action and your life is changed irrevocably, for better or worse.

Right place, wrong time.
Wrong place, right time.

There is no way to predict how one event will effect another, no way to change it back to the way it was.

Sometimes I feel like I’ve just spent my whole life adjusting to changes that never really give me a chance to feel comfortable in the ‘now’. I always thought I was the kind of person who was alright with change, after all it’s a natural part of life.

Part of me wants things to just sit still for a few minutes. Just long enough for me to catch my breath and say, “Ok, I’ve got it. Let continue.”

Obviously I’m asking for too much, but the thought is nice at least. I’m sure tomorrow will bring some new change, something different to process and adjust to.

I know I’ll manage, after all, what kind of life would you lead if you forced yourself to remain in the past?

But at the same time, it doesn’t mean I’ll do it willingly.

Mahoney News

One of these days, when I have a whole lot of time to spare, I will dedicate a nice elaborate post to Mahoney. (The reason I go to the Buckle on Friday nights).

However, this one is just a quick update for all those of you who already know who Mahoney is.

Ready for it?
Hold on to your nickers!

Mahoney is going to be releasing an ORIGINAL CD this year!!

I fully expect each and every person in this city to support such an incredible example of local talent. Don’t let me down folks!

The Difference a Generation Makes

First I must admit that I found out about the following website through Mashable – so it wasn’t my own personal discovery, but that’s ok cause I’m going to share it with you.

The entire purpose behind this website is comedic value, and unlike places like LameBook, it doesn’t have that horrifying twist to it. (I’m not saying that some of the posts on the site won’t make you wince, but I promise you won’t be scarred from it!)

The website is called When Parents Text and features some very unfortunate conversations between parents and their kids. Some are examples of generation gaps, some are those topics that you never really wanted to talk about with family.

Most of them are more hilarious than horrifying – and make me wish with intense longing that my Mother texted. It would be amazing. (Love you Mom! I mean nothing bad by that, just that the entertainment value would be brilliant!)

I’ve taken the liberty of including a few examples of the type of content you can expect.

You’re welcome!

P.S. If the site is down, blame Mashable. Pretty sure they’ve driven more traffic to this site in one day than it has had since its conception.

Add a Little Sparkle to Your Life

For those of you who like to take the occasional break from the hectic details of everyday life – tonight is your perfect opportunity. We are going to be gifted with the Geminid Meteor shower today and tomorrow.
2009 Leonid Meteor
Heralded as the best meteor shower of the year this is one you aren’t going to want to miss. It is predicted that you could see up to 120 meteors an hour – burning bright blue across the sparkling night sky.
A delightful little fact about this meteor shower is that no one really knows for sure how the debris field came to be. NASA has a ton of theories, but not one of them can fully explain the phenomenon.
The best time to watch the shower is supposed to be after midnight, when the moon is low and the constellation Gemini is high. Personally I don’t think that post-midnight is in the cards for me – but I’ll have my eyes glued to the sky for as long as I can stay awake.
If you want to search for the Gemini constellation while watching for the shooting stars I’ve taken the liberty of finding a little bit about it. You can find more information, including how to find it – on Wikipedia.
So grab a blanket, a hot beverage and your nearest loved one. Snuggle up under the stars and allow yourself to be swept away by the beauty of it all.
If you live in Canada, make the blanket heated, multiply it by twenty and bring at least 25L of hot liquid as opposed to just a thermos. Don’t forget the mitts, touque, winter boots, jacket, scarf and hand/toe warmers!

Wait… what am I talking about?

There are always going to be days where everything just seems to make sense. Maybe it’s not even so much days (a lot can change in 24 hours), but at the very least there are moments.
Moments where the whole world is completely clear. Your past, present and future seem to align in this wonderful cosmic balance and everything is right.
Unfortunately such days, or moments, tend to be rather few and far between.
The rest of us who aren’t experiencing such a wonderful period of time are the ones that are left with the doubt and stress and disappointments of everything that jumbles together to create our lives.
(As a brief warning, I had no idea where I was going with this when I started writing, and I still don’t. So it might end up being a little bit long winded as I work it all out.)
I’m not sure when I last felt such a moment of peace and clarity, I know I’ve had them, but the exact time of the last one is definitely eluding me at the moment. At least in part, I’m certain that it is my fault. There is the inability to just let go of the worries of the world. To focus so much on perfecting the moment that you miss all the potential that it really has. Makes me wonder how many of those moments I could have had if I’d simply let myself.
Truly, I think we as a race tend to ruin most of the good moments just by over-thinking them. What could have been wonderful and perfect is tarnished by brains that cannot just accept it.
Oh sure, the ability to think and analyze and determine is all fine and dandy, up until the moment that all that analyzing gets in the way of wonder. That’s when you really have a problem. If you’ve gone past the point of being able to look up into the night sky and be amazed. Or listen to a singer with the most incredible voice and suddenly find you have goosebumps running up your arm. – If you can’t appreciate such things because you’re too caught up in your own brain – maybe that simply means it is time to leave the brain behind.
Brains are great, don’t get me wrong. But every once in a while, I think we all need to put toss our brains into a lovely little jar and then hide said jar on a very high shelf. Normally you’ll find that without the brain, the heart will take over. (Something has to!) and after the heart has been in control for a little while the disaster that has become of your psyche (is that the right word? .. I’m looking for the one that sounds like Sa-iee-key) will balance out a bit. At which point you’re more than welcome to pop the brain back in.
After all, it does come in handy once in a while – like when it tells you not to buy the watch from the suspicious looking fellow in a trench-coat on the rather seedy street corner. In such cases, you should probably listen.
… As you can see, I’m not currently having one of those “oh just look at the clarity” moments. I think I’ve made my point, though I would be delighted if someone could enlighten me and tell my poor overworked brain what it is… If only I could remember what shelf I put it on…

Calling All Medicine Hat Bloggers

I’ve decided to add a few new sections to the blog over the next little while. The first section is going to feature local bloggers.

As you can see above I’ve added the bare bones basic page already and included a few of the blogs that I know about. If you have one, or know of other Bloggers in the Medicine Hat area then please share the information. You can comment here, drop me an e-mail, post on my facebook page or even send me a message on Twitter!

Please Note: I cannot guarantee that I will feature all local blogs.

Can’t wait to hear from you!

Twitter Wins! (This Time)

Thrilled.

That’s what I am right now. Finally I have this teeny tiny little bit of hope that by the time I actually finish my illusive novel – there will still be readers left in the world!
Look! I’ll show you.

No, no. I’m not talking about the fact that ‘Lenon’ as opposed to the correct spelling of John Lennon’s name is trending. That’s just sad. By itself it would have been just one more black mark against the collective intelligence of the human race. However, it is completely offset by the fact that #whyiread is trending!
Amazingly enough the majority of the tweets are actually seriously pro-reading! Only a few here and there are the predictable “I don’t” and “Reading is for losers”.
Oh wait. Who am I kidding – they were really more like “i dnt” and “readdn s 4 losrs”. Sorry, the editor in me was having a bit of trouble letting such horrifying examples of the literary skills of modern youth find their way onto my blog. The readers were exponentially more eloquent – odd isn’t it?
I’ve pulled together a few of my favorite #whyiread tweets – to make you book lovers out there smile and realize;
You are not alone.
There are at least ten of us.
See:
@jasonpinter: As you get older, you realize being that nerdy kid who read all the time was the best thing that could have happened to you. #whyiread
@BrighterGee You can spoil endings for people at the cinema if the book adapts into a movie #whyiread
(But as they say, with great power comes great responsibility – and this is one power that should never be exploited. Ruining endings is cruel and unusual punishment.)
@Tamara_Morgan: It’s cheaper than time travel. #whyIread
@karenrivers Because I could not stop. Even if I wanted to. I belong to books. #whyiread
@ChantelleJada: #whyiread because the book is always better than the movie.
@Theriaka: Because without imagination humanity would never evolve. #whyiread
@halseanderson: Because reading is my inhale and writing is my exhale. #WhyIRead
@jasonpinter: Because a Linkin Park, Ke$ha or Cee-Lo song never changed the way I view the world. #whyiread
(He’s on fire. Fire I tell you!)

@runninheels: #whyiread = #whyibreathe
@BonaFidePYT: Because they expect me not to. #WhyIRead
@Vogelrachelm: #whyiread a good book makes the fire cozier, the hot chocolate warmer, and the holiday season more memorable
I shamelessly admit that I included my own tweet in there. A girl’s gotta get her props somehow!
I will say this though – It is hard to distill everything that is amazing about reading into the 140 character limit that twitter gives you. One of these days I might just have to elaborate on the subject.
Why do you read?
