Rising Gas Prices in the Hat

Gas prices are unfortunately on the rise, and with it the tempers of many Hatters. Luckily for you, there’s an app for that. It’s called Gas Buddy and you can use it to record the prices at gas stations as well as view the most recent prices that have been submitted. It is available for iphone, android and windows powered phones, and you can check out the website HERE. Wonderfully enough it also happens to be free.
Unfortunately I won’t have a smart phone for a few weeks so I can’t actually test it out, but if you use it I’d love to know what you think. And if you don’t, why not download it – and then come back and tell Hatters about it?

Learning Curve

This whole ‘life’ thing is surprisingly hard work. Oh I know, we all knew that it would be before we stepped into the big wide world — but I never cease to be amazed by just how difficult it can be sometimes.

On a more positive note, the hard bits make you learn, and learning is generally a good thing. I’m learning about responsibilities and a bunch of really out-of-my-sphere things like plumbing, and the welding industry. I could actually explain to someone what radiant floor heating is if I wanted to. Bizarre.

I have also learnt that no matter how much I wish it was, not every speck of information is contained within the internet. And if it is, the internet muses have chosen to keep a goodly portion to themselves. It’s very selfish, and I don’t approve. This has brought me to the conclusion that I am entirely too dependent on the internet — if it disappeared, I wouldn’t have the slightest clue what to do with my days. It would also have the rather unfortunate side effect of putting me out of a job.

Additional recent revelations have included the discovery that housework is never really over – unless I decide to stop eating, I will be forced to do dishes for the rest of my existence. It’s a terrible plan.

On a completely unrelated side note, I have another somewhat interesting website for you.
You can find it HERE.

If you are at all interested in design, they post a few interesting tidbits once in a while. Who knew you could do so much with a teeny little business card. (Oh look! More learning. I guess it is related after all.)

Have a great day, and I hope you enjoy your learning curve. Whether you notice it or not, there will something new that pops up today. I guarantee it.

Did you miss me?

As a break from the norm I have decided to put together a list of some of the things I’ve found online that were particularly interesting. There is no rhyme or reason to any of them, save the fact that they all caught my attention.

I do apologize for the lack of posts lately, if it is any consolation, my housework has received the same sort of neglect.

Oh beautiful sunrise…

The sunrise in the Hat today was not only gorgeous, but undeniable proof that the days are finally getting longer.

Oh sun, how I have missed you.

On the off chance that anyone captured a photo of the sunrise, or any others in and around Medicine Hat that are just as beautiful, I would love to have them sent my way.

If I actually get a few, I’ll be able to do a post dedicated to the beauty of sunrises without just talking about it! (Any photographs used would of course be credited to the original photographer.)

Rock Paper Scissors – Medicine Hat

Rock, Paper, Scissors…. Lizard, Spock??

Medicine Hat is playing host to an event that promises to be good fun for the whole family and gives you an opportunity to win $500 cash, all while supporting a great cause.

The event is the Rock Paper Scissors Championship and it is being held at the Esplanade at 1pm on February 12th. All proceeds from the event will be going directly to Junior Achievement, an organization that helps the youth of Southern Alberta learn and discover the skills they need to be successful leaders and entrepreneurs.

Registration for the event can be done right at the Esplanade on February 12th, the cost is only $5 per person or $20 for the whole family. Each person who registers will have a chance to win the $500 prize.

In addition, $500 will also be donated to one of the schools that has been participating in the Rock Paper Scissors Event.

Junior Achievement receives no government funding so this event is their main source of funding in the Hat.

If you are interested in finding more about Junior Achievement you can visit their website or follow them on Twitter. (You can follow or tune-in to event news by using the hashtag #RPS on Twitter)

Join the Facebook page for updates, strategy tips and an easy way to share this event with your family and friends!

NOTE: Currently Lizard and Spock are not part of the official game, but your chances of seeing them crop up a few times around the event are quite high!

To Be a Hero

(The following is a glimpse into the mind of a Hero who has not yet been written… A Hero I know nothing about except that these thoughts are hers, and hers alone.)
“Tell me, does the world ever give back even a little of what it takes? We heap it with hope and forgiveness, but what do we really get in return?
Lost dreams and an uncertain future. Is there even one thing that makes it all worth it?
The hopeful ones – they have love. But what about the cynics? What do they get out of the deal?
We are forced to live with the belief that the world is exactly how we see it. Harsh, unforgiving and uncaring.
Sometimes I wonder if I wouldn’t give it all up to be one of those with hope. But doesn’t it stand to reason that a few of us must face the ugly truth?
How else can we change it?
Of course believing that change is possible requires hope – since I obviously have none, why struggle each day towards an end I don’t even believe in?
Maybe it’s because if I don’t do it, no one will. Maybe it’s because I know that if humanity continues down this path, we are doomed.
The only thing I am certain of is that I would never be able to live with myself if I didn’t even try to prevent this fate.
That, is my destiny.”

Blog Updates

Phew, my other blog has been receiving so much of my attention it’s almost a miracle that I’m updating this one. My apologies for that!

A few updates for you;

You may have noticed that I have added some extra content to the blog here, I definitely encourage you to check it out and let me know what you think! I know none of it is pretty, you’ll have to give me time for that. Unfortunately at the moment the appearance is more or less on the back-burner.

I’d like to thank Medicine Hat Media for adding the Medicine Hat Spotlight to their list of partners. Much woot-ness!

Tune in soon to learn about a great event happening in the Hat next month! (Don’t forget, if you have an event you would like me to mention just drop me a message either here, on twitter or send me an e-mail.)

Blog Design – What do you Love?

I’ve been doing some research on blog designs, trying to find a few that really stand out for me. I have a preference for clean blogs that are easy to read but contain all the little details that make them spectacular. (Don’t worry, I know this blog is not one of them!)

If you happen to frequent some blogs with design that you love, please be sure to let me know. I plan on compiling a list of well designed blogs that I have found, and your picks could be included in it!

Nothing cluttered and messy please, and they should have at least one detail that makes them unique.

Thanks for reading and I look forward to finding out what you love!

Take a moonment. (Sorry.)

It’s easy to take things for granted, especially when they are blocked out by tall buildings, smog, and our ever present urge to stare at our feet rather than the heavens.

Should you happen to take the time to look up in the occasionally clear night sky and forget about the million things that are bugging you, you may end up pleasantly surprised. If you really look up at the moon, especially when it’s full and bright in the sky, it is easy to comprehend why it was worshiped in so many cultures (and still is in some)!

When was the last time you escaped the confines of the city with its clutter of people, mess and noise? When the sky finally cleared and the air was no longer a chore to breathe, did you appreciate it?

If you live outside the bustling cities, do you know how lucky you are? If the wonder of the heavens isn’t muted by mankind’s attempt to drown it out, do you look?

Labels don’t scare me.

In this ridiculous world of ours we are judged by the things we believe. It’s an unfortunate way to exist because it means that anyone who dares to think outside the box is labeled odd, crazy or even better; a conspiracy theorist.

What do you believe? Are you afraid to say it out loud because of what people might think of you? Do you know how to believe in things or are you one of the people who simply regurgitates what you’re expected to?

It used to drive me crazy that people thought I was out of my mind for saying things like, “I bet a lot of the famous works of art on display in museums aren’t even the real thing!”. In my mind it makes sense that they would have some of those brilliant forgers out there create perfect copies and display those while keeping the real thing safe.

I wasn’t saying it had to be that way, just that I was open to the possibility – there was logic behind the idea after all.

There is no point hiding the fact that I’m open to possibilities – it will come out eventually. Especially if I ever actually finish and publish one of my novels!

With that in mind – I’m going to lay it all out there, because I can.

I Believe

I believe that there is more to the world than just what we see.

I believe that the big corporations and drug companies care only about making money and design their own version of the truth.

I believe there is life on other planets.

I believe that there was more to the creation of our Universe than just a really big explosion that somehow, amazingly, became everything that we see around us. (BAM!! *oh hey look complex life forms!*)

I believe there is more to life than how big your TV is and how expensive a car you own. Contrary to popular belief you will not be ostracized if your TV is 2” smaller than all your friends.

I believe that every person makes a difference in the world.

I believe that organic food is better for us and the planet.

I believe that McDonald’s forgot a long time ago that beef comes from cows and potatoes from… potatoes. (Due to their forgetfulness they have replaced both with a combination of sawdust and preservatives.)

I believe that doing anything simply because it is cool – is unintelligent and pointless.

I believe that kids don’t read enough and should also occasionally put down the Playstation controller and go outside.

I believe that TV teaches our kids a whole load of bullshit. For example after just one modern kids show you’ll end up firmly convinced that’s it’s ok to be stupid, girls can’t be pretty AND smart and it’s normal to disrespect your parents.

I believe there are people who are born with abilities that are above and beyond the norm. (I check every once in a while juuuust in case I’ve developed super powers. You never know!)

…. to be continued.

Were you shaking your head at my apparent lunacy?

Do you honestly believe that the world is exactly how you perceive it? Are you so trapped in your own little world that you cannot even imagine anything outside of it?

If so, I say it is your loss – the world has so much more potential when you are willing to consider that there is more to it than meets the eye.

My world is fascinating, and full of possibilities. What is your world like?
