Amazon Announces ‘Kindle Touch’ and ‘Kindle Fire’

I had every intention of writing a review today, however Amazon has trumped that with their latest press release. I’m really quite excited about this, so without further ado:

You can now buy a Kindle for ONLY $79, if you live in the US. Yup. How perfect is that? Whether you want it for yourself or as a gift, Amazon just dropped it into a price range that is affordable. I wish they had done this before I bought mine!

It is lighter and smaller, though it still boasts a 6″ display, the amazing e-ink and wi-fi.

Note: the $79 version is the ‘special offers’ version — this just means that it will display ‘special offers’ and ads – though never while you are reading.

Isn’t it pretty?? The price even makes it less scary to buy one for the kids! (You can currently buy this kindle internationally but from what I can see, it is more expensive outside the US.)

But wait! I’m not done yet… not even close.

If your price range is a little higher, Amazon now has a few more options available to you:

That would be the Kindle Touch. This touch screen beauty is sleek, small, has build in wi-fi and can be purchased for the extraordinarily low price of $99. (With special offers). You can pre-order it now and it will ship November 21st. There is also a 3G version, but of course that is more expensive.

This is the one that I would purchase! (Not with 3G though, there are more than enough wi-fi networks for me to manage on) Unfortunately I will have to wait until it is available in Canada… It is US only for the moment.

The last all-new item I have to announce is the Kindle Fire. Their slogan? “From Kindle, Fire is born”

This would be an all-new tablet from Amazon. Now while it doesn’t feature a camera, 3G or e-ink it  does have a few features that make it quite remarkable.

First of all, the price; this tablet is being sold for the mind-blowing price of $199.

Can you say holy crap?

Now, for the moment, one thing makes it a little less exciting for me — it appears to also be a US only product. Though hopefully that will change in the near future. For the moment you (if you live in the US) can pre-order and it will ship on November 15th.

The touchscreen looks great, and apparently it boasts an all new browsing system that makes it super speedy.

It looks to me like it would be a great media device; for your movies, music and so on. However I’m not sure about reading on it — it would probably be similar to an Ipad in that regard since it is back-lit and not e-ink.

What do you think of this new development??

Check out the:

Kindle Fire

Once Amazon makes these available to other countries, I’ll post an update!

  1. I enjoyed salivating on the products! lol!
I wanted one of these but I’m from the Philippine! What a downer!

    But I have a question from a very not-techie person… What does back-lit and e-ink means?

    New follower from BOOK BLOGS!

  2. Well hopefully they will be available worldwide before too long!

Back lighting simply means that the screen is lit from behind. Like a TV or monitor. (If you turn off the lights you will still see what is on the screen).

The kindle doesn’t have this because it’s not the same type of screen. It uses e-ink, which is what makes it so easy to read.

E-ink is a little harder to explain, but basically the screen on a kindle isn’t so much a ‘screen’ as it is electronic paper. It simulates the look of ink of the page, and once the ‘ink’ has been applied it doesn’t use any power until you switch the page and it is wiped and ‘reapplied’. This is what allows the month long battery life and reading in direct sunlight. (Hope that makes a little bit of sense!)

Thanks so much for the follow!
