The Darkness in Us All

I’m freezing. I’m fully clothed, slippers and all, in my house… and I’m freezing. it’s not cool.

I have a dark little secret to share.

I’m infinitely fond of books with a darker side to them. I won’t admit it to the general population but a character with a dark nasty past and who isn’t wholly good is the ultimate attraction for me. I would never want to meet him, or date him, but in my world of fantasy he is just the kind of person who can distract me completely and utterly from the world.

Lately I’ve been having a hard time finding books that really catch my attention, in fact, I’ve hardly been reading at all lately which is quite the drastic change for me.

I had intended to write a review for Memoirs of a Geisha which I just recently read, but who knows if I actually will get around to doing it properly, so for now I will just say that it was an amazingly well written book, which was so catching I read it in an evening and didn’t want to put it down.
(which has nothing to do with the reason I started this post)

Anne Bishop. The Author, is the reason I began this post.

She is one of the few authors that has me utterly entranced at the moment, I’ve read five or six of her books and each and every one was good enough that I read them from cover to cover in one sitting.
The books are The Black Jewel trilogy, and others relating to realm thereof.
They are dark. There is sex, slavery, sex slavery, death, and all manner of horrible nasty things which I don’t actually enjoy reading but draw you in none-the-less.
But there is also emotion, love, betrayal, forgiveness…
The writing is unique and completely unapologetic. There is no mincing words, you see it all just like it is intended to be seen, good/bad/profane, all of it.

I love it.

Don’t read her works if you are easily offended or embarrassed. Or no – actually. If you are, you should definitely read them. It would be good for you.

I give her five stars and cannot wait until I can go pick up the first book in another series she has written and find out if it is as good as what I have already read. I do believe they involve someone who goes by the name of Sebastian, but other than that, I know nothing.
