For those of you who like to take the occasional break from the hectic details of everyday life – tonight is your perfect opportunity. We are going to be gifted with the Geminid Meteor shower today and tomorrow.
Heralded as the best meteor shower of the year this is one you aren’t going to want to miss. It is predicted that you could see up to 120 meteors an hour – burning bright blue across the sparkling night sky.
A delightful little fact about this meteor shower is that no one really knows for sure how the debris field came to be. NASA has a ton of theories, but not one of them can fully explain the phenomenon.
The best time to watch the shower is supposed to be after midnight, when the moon is low and the constellation Gemini is high. Personally I don’t think that post-midnight is in the cards for me – but I’ll have my eyes glued to the sky for as long as I can stay awake.
If you want to search for the Gemini constellation while watching for the shooting stars I’ve taken the liberty of finding a little bit about it. You can find more information, including how to find it – on Wikipedia.
So grab a blanket, a hot beverage and your nearest loved one. Snuggle up under the stars and allow yourself to be swept away by the beauty of it all.
If you live in Canada, make the blanket heated, multiply it by twenty and bring at least 25L of hot liquid as opposed to just a thermos. Don’t forget the mitts, touque, winter boots, jacket, scarf and hand/toe warmers!
